Last Day

 Happy Summer!!

The last two days were filled with the Kindness Rock Project, celebrated our last ECO with some delicious hot cocoa cooked over the Kelly Kettle, and a puppet show about the incredible ecosystem within a rotted log.

I will miss you all!  Have a wonderful summer!

Last Full Week Of Kindergarten

Can you believe this school year is winding down in just two more days?  It has been such a wonderful year together.  This week we had many fun activities where we celebrated the strong bonds and sense of community we all share here at UCS.

We wished Mr. R. off on his new journey as a 5th-grade Social Studies teacher in Barre next year!  We have loved the time that he has spent with us.  We all have so many fond memories.  He gifted UCS a beautifully painted wooden plaque for our woodland trail.  We love it and we will think of him whenever we see it! πŸ’š

Field Day was a blast, as expected!  We participated in many creative and fun stations.  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make all of this happen and run smoothly!

Rocket Day was very exciting!  We watched the rockets with anticipation and enthusiasm and can't wait to be 4th graders!  :)

Mrs. Neeson and Mr. Menz reunited for a sing-along for us on Friday. It brought me back to Smilie School days when they used to sing together.  Mrs. Neeson has been so kind to volunteer her time with our class this year and share her talents, making us laugh, and teaching us many things!  Thank you, Mrs. Neeson!! ❤❤❤

I want to wish all the fathers out there a Happy Father's Day!

I also want to wish you all a wonderful summer!

Love from,

Mrs. Poor

Taking Our Opinion To The Trail!

Hello!

We can't believe this is our final full week together!

Kindergartners have been busy learning about different places in our world!  We were so lucky to have 3 different families come in and share about special places they have lived.  We learned about Poland, Italy, and Switzerland! We were taught how to sing Happy Birthday in Polish and Italian!  Thank you so much for coming in and enriching our curriculum!

This week in Writing we read a true story called The Tree Lady.  A story about a woman named Kate Sessions who majors in science during a time when women were discouraged from studying science.  Kate ends up planting trees and plants all around San Diego and creates a lush land where once a desert was. We reminded ourselves of some of the other books we've read where people have fought for something they believed in like the book Water Protectors and Luna and Me. Later we began brainstorming problems that we have noticed.  These problems ranged from littering to world peace.  Kindergartners are amazing!  We decided to take a stand on issues that might be happening around our nature trail at school.  Friday we built signs that mostly stated a request and gave a reason.  For example, "Leave the branches on the trees because it can hurt the trees."  These messages were beautiful and meaningful to our class.  We then had fun placing them around the trail.

Come take a walk on the trail!

This week we explored different types of weather, and what a forecast is.  Kindergartners were presented with a challenge to create a shelter for themselves or an animal to be safe during some severe weather.  Students worked well together in the forest collaborating on different ideas.

We continued to explore opinion writing.  Students chose a favorite VT animal and wrote why it is their favorite.  Students are working toward challenging themselves to come up with two reasons and elaborating more in their writing in the coming weeks.

In Math, we have played with teen numbers and considered place value, recognizing that the number 13 stands for 1 ten and 3 ones. Students enjoyed playing the game Bump, teen numbers edition this time.  The task was to roll a die and add 10 to the number and then place their cube on the corresponding number on the game board. Students love the game of Bump!

This past Wednesday, The Underhill Jericho Fire Department visited all the students to discuss fire safety.  They taught the students about the importance of smoke detectors.  They also discussed the importance of each family having a fire safety plan.  If your family does not have a fire safety plan, please consider creating one. Home Fire Escape Plan Link. The students saw a firefighter in full gear, and for the highlight, they got to check out the fire truck.  Please visit this link with important Fire Safety information from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
